Why was Ken Mattingly replaced by John Swigert?
Swigert was a better pilot.
Captain Jim Lovell decided to replace him.
Mattingly was needed on the ground to help with the engines after the explosion.
Charles Duke exposed the crew to German measles and Mattingly wasn't immune.
During the first two days . . .
they were struck by a meteor.
Apollo 13 circled the moon without landing.
the crew put on a TV show that was watched around the world.
Apollo 13 was looking like the smoothest flight of the program.
Why was the mission classified as a successful failure?

We failed getting the first man in space but beat the Russians to the moon.

How cold did it really get?
It actually got really hot because they were not shielded from the sun.
Not too cold, about 50 degrees, but they didn't have any blankets.

The temperature dropped to about 38 degrees which is nearly freezing for days after they shut down power.
How did they solve the carbon dioxide problem?
There was no problem, they actually had plenty of oxygen.
Mission control devised a way to attach the square CM canisters to the round LM system by using plastic bags, cardboard and to tape all materials carried on board.
They quickly moved to the lunar module (LM) so they could use the oxygen there.
The ground crew devised a way to burn the engines for five minutes to make a 1/2 degree adjustment and re-route the power to the CM (command module)
In the end . . .
The all crashed down in the Pacific Ocean and died on impact.
Everyone survived and everyone was fine.
