France took advantage of the situation and invaded Germany to recover Alsace-Lorraine, that Germany had taken from them years before.
Germany knew Russia were mobilising, and wanted to enact the Schlieffen Plan to defend themselves. However, the plan only worked if they were invading France too... so they made up an excuse and did it!
Austria-Hungary and France were already at war over another issue, and so Germany wanted to support them there too.
France sent a telegram to Germany telling them that Austria-Hungary's war was ridiculous and that they looked very silly getting involved. Germany were outraged!
