Machimosaurus Rex
Paleontologist Federico Fanti made a significant discovery in the Sahara Desert of Tunisia where they found the bones of Machimosaurus rex. The bones were just below the sand and were in very good condition. The place where Fanti’s team found the dinosaur would have been watery lagoons and huge forests near the ocean about 130 million years ago. This massive dinosaur, which weighed around 2,700 kg (5,950 lb.) is the largest known marine crocodile that ever lived. Fanti believes this prehistoric creature was as long as a bus—10 m (33 ft.) long. Its head, which took scientists two days to dig up, was about the size of a human teenager. M. rex preyed upon fish, turtles, and other mammals that got too close to the water. Its huge jaws could crush a turtle in a single bite.
The significance of Fanti's discovery isn’t the size of this giant creature, but that it questions the accuracy of the mass extinction theory of animals. Paleontologists previously thought that a major catastrophe, which happened 150 million years ago, made all the large animals extinct. However, these bones, which were dated as being 25 million years younger, show that not all animals became extinct. M. rex could have been an exception. Fanti now believes paleontologists need to do more work in this area where little research has taken place. New discoveries could help scientists develop new theories about the mass extinction.
