Although he couldn’t go to school, William’s love of reading helped him to find the solution to his family’s problems in a library book. Although he couldn’t go to school, William’s love of reading helped him to find the solution to his family’s problems in a library book. It explained how to build a windmill which produced electricity. This would make the farm more efficient and provide the family with light, so they could also work at night.

The windmill ................ electrical energy.

William wanted to design his own windmill, but it wasn’t easy getting the parts to build it. So he started collecting the rubbish which was thrown away in his village. He created his windmill from recycled tractor parts and reused bicycle wheels! His neighbours thought he was crazy.

But then one evening, William connected the finished windmill to his home … he pressed a switch and, suddenly, his family’s house was the only one in the village with electricity and light.

When William turned on his windmill, ...................... got electricity.

Over time, William improved his windmill, and built another, which moved water to his family’s farm. Soon after that, his engineering talent made him famous, and his story was told in a book and on an online blog. His education was paid for by business people who heard of his inventions. William now hopes to provide electricity to the whole of Malawi

Helen Carter only took up rock climbing two years ago, and she has already reached the top of her sport. This year, she has climbed Europe’s highest mountains, and now she is preparing to go one higher: Mount Everest. I visited Helen to find out what she’s taking with her to the top of the world.

I’ve arrived and Helen has already started to show me all of

the gear she’s planning to pack. There are two new T-shirts she got in the sales, but everything else is kit that she has already used – a lot of it borrowed from friends. This is because she can’t afford new equipment. ‘And, on a big climb, you should only take gear that you’ve already tried out. I learned this lesson last year, when new boots hurt my feet,’ she smiles.

Helen has already started putting things in her backpack, when I notice goggles and sunscreen on the bed. Is she planning to sunbathe? ‘No, but the sun’s reflection on the snow is a problem for climbers,’ she answers.

When we arrived, a few of us went to Buckingham Palace. The Queen’s Guard, the soldiers at the palace, can’t laugh or speak to tourists, so we tried to make one laugh. Emma went up to him and started telling him jokes, but he suddenly moved and shouted, ‘Stand back from the guard!’ Emma looked really nervous. The guard didn’t think it was funny, but we all laughed about it later
