Australia, the Pacific Realm, and Antarctica are frequent destinations for adventure tourism. Adventure tourism takes travelers to remote areas and involves active enjoyment of the physical environment.

New Zealand and Australia are popular destinations for adventure tourists. In New Zealand, rock climbing, mountain biking, and cave exploration are a few of the ways people enjoy the rugged terrain. Adventurers explore New Zealand’s interior rivers and lakes by rafting, kayaking, and canoeing. Whale-watching expeditions provide opportunities to see the many different species that inhabit the waters off New Zealand’s coast.

People seeking active enjoyment of unusual physical environments also travel to Australia –particularly to its Great Barrier Reef, which draws millions of tourists every year. In 2009, more than two million people visited this natural wonder. Activities on the Great Barrier Reef include snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, and exploring reef waters in glass-bottomed boats.

In Antarctica, hikers trek across glaciers, which are large masses of ice and packed snow. Expert guides help hikers cross dramatic crevasses, or deep, open cracks in glaciers. Visitors to Antarctica can also observe emperor penguins, leopard seals, and other Antarctic birds and animals in their natural habitat.
