The Can Man is a homeless man who needs help just like there are people in the real world who need help. In the text states, "Tim gives the Can Man his coins for a coat." I once helped a homeless man by giving him money just like Tim gave the Can Man money.

Alexander got gum in his hair, and I once had gum stuck in my hair while taking a nap. It states on page 1 that, "I had gum stuck in my hair." This shows that we both had gum stuck in our hair.
