A significant problem facing Virginia, Maryland, and other American colonies in the 1600 and 1700’s was a shortage of labor. One answer devised by the Virginia Company was indentured servitude, a system by which poor people in England and other countries agreed to work for a fixed period of labor in exchange for passage to America. Servants were often treated harshly and many died before their terms of service were over.
