General Certificate of Secondary Education​. The exams taken by most 15 or 16 year olds in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Marks are given for each subject separately.

At present they are split into A1’s and A2’s. A2 is a full A level.

There is a certain amount of dissatisfaction with this system. Head teachers want to throw it out and want to adopt a foreign model - specifically the baccalaureate.
