뉴욕에서 태어나 자란 Fine 씨는 뉴멕시코의 사막에 농장을 사서 그곳으로 이사를 하셨습니다.

안녕하세요, Fine 씨. 우리 시청자들에게 자기소개를 해주시겠습니까?

Hello, Mr. Fine. Would you please introduce [you / yourself] to our audience?

Fine 씨: 네. 안녕하세요, 여러분. 여기서 뵙게 되어 기쁩니다. 제 이름은 Doug Fine이고 기자입니다.

Mr. Fine: Yes. Hi, everyone. It's great [being / to be] here. My name is Doug Fine, and I am a journalist.

화석 연료 사용을 끊고 최대한 친환경적인 삶을 살려고 노력하고 있습니다.

I'm trying [to stop / stopping] using fossil fuels and [live / living] as green a life as possible.

진행자: 화석 연료 사용을 끊으려 하신다고 말씀하셨는데요. 어째서요? 화석 연료가 무엇이 문제입니까?

Host: You [said / are said] you are trying to quit [to use / using] fossil fuels. Why? What's wrong with fossil fuels?

Fine 씨: 뭐, 우리 모두 알고 있는 이야기지요, 안 그렇습니까?

Mr. Fine: Well, we all know the story, [do we / don't we]?

우리는 주로 화석 연료를 태워 에너지를 얻지만 거기에는 한두 가지 문제가 있습니다.

We get energy mainly from [burn / burning] fossil fuels, but there [is / are] a couple of problems with that.

화석 연료는 재생이 불가능한데, 그 말은 조만간 고갈된다는 의미입니다.

Fossil fuels are not renewable, [that / which] [mean / means] that sooner or later we are going to run out of them.

또한 화석 연료는 환경을 해칩니다. 화석 연료를 태우면 탄소가스가 생성되는데, 이것이 기후에 해로운 영향을 끼칩니다.

Also, they harm the environment. When you burn fossil fuels, carbon gas [is producing / is produced], which [has / have] a harmful effect on the climate.

진행자: 기후 변화는 새로운 소식은 아니지만 우리는 우리와는 상관없는 문제로 생각하는 경향이 있지요.

Host: Climate change is not news, but we are [like / likely] to think it's [no / none] of our business.

Fine 씨: 저 역시 예전에는 심각하게 생각하지 않았습니다.

Mr. Fine: I [haven't taken / hadn't taken] it seriously before [too / either].

하지만 알래스카에서 다큐멘터리 작업을 하면서 기후 변화가 심각하며 다른 모든 사람들은 물론 나 역시 책임이 있다는 걸 깨달았습니다.

While [worked / working] on a documentary in Alaska, however, I realized that climate change is serious and [that / what] I, along with everyone else, am responsible for it.

제 눈으로 직접 목격할 수 있었습니다. 어마어마한 빙하가 녹아 없어지고 있었어요.

I could see [it / them] with my own eyes. Enormous ice [sheet / sheets] were melting away.

내가 전깃불을 켜고 자동차를 몰고 심지어 먹거리를 쇼핑할 때마다 탄소를 공기 중에 배출한다는 걸 절실하게 실감했습니다. 뭔가 해야겠다는 느낌이 들었어요.

It struck [me / to me] hard that I was sending carbon into the air [whatever / whenever] I turned on the lights, drove a car, or even went shopping for food. I felt I had to do something.

진행자: 그래서 생활 방식을 바꾸기로 결심하셨군요. 정확히 무슨 일을 하셨습니까?

Host: So you decided [changing / to change] your way of life. What exactly did you do?

Fine 씨: 일단, 도시의 삶을 포기했습니다. 우리 생활에서 화석 연료를 가장 많이 태우는 두 가지가 무엇인지 아십니까? 전기와 수송 수단입니다.

Mr. Fine: [To begin / To begin with], I gave up city life. Do you know [that / what] the two things in our lives that burn the most fossil fuels are? Electricity and transportation.

그렇지만 두 가지를 완전히 빼고 살 수 있는 사람이 어디 있습니까? 우리는 절대 그럴 수가 없지요.

But who could live [entire / entirely] without [it / them]? We certainly cannot.

전기와 수송 수단이 없다면 원시인처럼 살아야 할 거예요.

If it [were not / had not been] for electricity and transportation, we [would have / would have had] to live like primitive people.

그래서 화석 연료 에너지에 너무 의존하는 현재의 체제와 다르게 두 가지를 해결하는 좀 더 지속 가능한 체계를 만들고 싶었습니다.

So I wanted to set up a more sustainable system of providing for them, [different / differently] from the current one that is so [depended / dependent] upon fossil fuel energy.

뉴욕처럼 큰 도시에서는 하기 어려운 일이었지요.

It was difficult [of / for] me to do this in a city as [big / bigger] as New York.

진행자: 달리 말해서, 현대의 모든 혜택은 즐기되, 화석 연료 사용만 대폭 줄이기를 원하셨군요.

Host: In other words, you wanted to enjoy all the [benefit / benefits] of the modern age, only with [very / a lot] less fossil fuels.

Fine 씨: 바로 그겁니다. 전기에 관한 한, 제 해답은 태양광 에너지였습니다. 제가 뉴멕시코를 선택한 이유이기도 하지요.

Mr. Fine: Exactly. As for electricity, my answer was solar energy. It's also the reason [I chose/ which I chose] New Mexico.

그곳에서는 태양이 거의 일 년 내내 내리쬐니까요. 그렇지만 저로서는 햇빛으로부터 전기를 얻는 게 쉽지는 않았어요.

The sun shines almost all [year / years] round there. Still, it was not easy [of / for] me to get electricity from sunlight.

태양광 패널은 놀랄 만큼 비싸고, 설치하는 데도 애를 먹었죠. 그렇지만 노력한 만큼의 가치는 있었습니다.

Solar panels are [surprising / surprisingly] expensive, and I had trouble putting them in place. It was [worth / worthy] the effort, though.

지금은 제 농장의 전력 사용량의 상당 부분을 직접 설치한 태양광 시스템으로 보급합니다.

Now a [large / many] part of the electricity [using / used] on my farm is provided by my DIY solar system.

태양광으로 바꾸고 나서 제 농장은 평범한 미국 가정이 쓰는 화석 연료 에너지의 1/10밖에 쓰지 않아요.

After going solar, my farm uses only one [ten / tenth] of the fossil fuel energy [using / used] by the average American household.

진행자: 그리고 수송 수단에 관해서는, 듣기로 지금 아주 특별한 트럭을 몰고 계시다고요.

Host: And regarding transportation, I hear you now [drive / driven] a very special truck.

Fine 씨: 네. 제가 생각하기에 아주 기가 막힌 아이디어를 착안했는데요, 바로 바이오 연료입니다.

Mr. Fine: Yes. I came up with [that / what] I [consider / is considered] a brilliant idea―biofuel.

디젤 트럭을 한 대 사서 식물성 기름으로 달릴 수 있게 개조했습니다.

I bought a diesel truck and had [it / them] [convert / converted] to run on vegetable oil.

디젤 엔진의 발명가인 Rudolf Diesel은 애초에 농부들이 스스로 연료를 경작할 수 있도록 하기 위한 의도를 갖고 있었어요.

Rudolf Diesel, the inventor of diesel engines, actually [intended / was intended] [of / for] farmers to grow their own fuel.

요즘은 연료를 넣으러 주유소에 더 이상 가지 않습니다.

These days, I [no / any] longer go to a gas station [gets / to get] fuel.

동네 중국 음식점에 주기적으로 방문해서 폐식용유를 모아 와요.

I pay regular [visits / visits to] a local Chinese restaurant and [collect / collecting] waste cooking oil.

돈이 들지도 않고 공기 중에 탄소를 배출하지도 않습니다.

It does not [cost / cost at] money and [does not send / is not sent] carbon into air.

유일한 문제는 트럭에서 프라이드 치킨 냄새가 나서 운전할 때마다 배가 고파 미치겠다는 것뿐이지요!

The only problem is that the truck [smells / smells like] fried chicken, and [drives / driving] it makes me terribly hungry!

진행자: 농업도 시작하셨지요. 음식과 탄소 배출량 감소는 무슨 상관이 있습니까?

Host: You also started farming. What does food have [doing / to do] with carbon reduction?

Fine 씨: 저는 생업이 농부는 아닙니다. 그저 제가 먹을 만큼만 길러내려 최선을 다할 뿐이지요.

Mr. Fine: I'm not a farmer by trade. I just try my best [growing / to grow] [that / what] I eat.

지역생산물을 먹는 것은 탄소 배출을 줄이는 또 다른 방법입니다.

Eating [local / locally] is [other / another] way of reducing carbon emissions.

오늘날 세계무역의 세상에서는 사람뿐 아니라 먹거리도 여행을 하거든요.

Not only people but also food [travel / travels] in this world of global trade.

점심 샐러드에 든 토마토는 칠레에서 왔을 수도 있습니다.

The tomatoes in your lunch salad [may come / may have come] from Chile.

이 토마토를 여러분에게 가져다주기 위해 제트 연료가 많이 소모됩니다.

To bring them [you / to you] [consuming / consumed] a lot of jet fuel.

저는 그냥 제 저녁식탁을 위해 과일과 채소를 기르고 날마다 먹을 계란을 낳아줄 닭을 몇 마리 키웁니다.

I grow fruits and vegetables and [raise / raising] some [chicken / chickens] for daily eggs, just for my dinner table.

우유와 아이스크림을 위해 염소도 키우고요. 아이스크림이 없다면 제 행복은 완전해질 수 없을 거예요!

I also raise goats for milk and ice cream. Without ice cream, my happiness [can't be / couldn't be / couldn't have been] complete!

진행자: 지금의 삶에 만족하십니까? 좀 더 지속 가능한 생활방식이 모두에게 가능하다고 생각하십니까?

Host: Are you [satisfying / satisfied] with your life? Do you think a more sustainable way of life is [possible / possibly] for everyone?

Fine 씨: 이 일을 시작할 때 혼자 세 가지 목표를 세웠습니다.

Mr. Fine: When I started this, I set three goals for [me / myself].

‘기름을 덜 쓸 것. 태양광 에너지로 전기를 공급해서 생활할 것, 그리고 지역 먹거리를 먹을 것.’

"Use [less / fewer] oil. [Power / Powering] my life with solar energy, and eat locally."

겨우 일 년 밖에 되지 않았지만 의미심장한 발전을 이루었다고 믿습니다.

It's been only a year, but I believe I've [made / been made] significant progress.

정신을 바짝 차리고 계속 노력한다면, 우리가 더 나은 미래를 이룩할 수 있다고 확신합니다.

If we stay aware and keep [to try / trying], I'm certain [that / what] we can build a better future.

모두가 제가 했던 것처럼 할 수는 없지만, 모두가 탄소 소비를 줄이기 위해 노력할 수 있고, 또 해야 합니다.
