정오에 그녀의 하인 중 한 명이 Trysdale의 집으로 와서 붉은 토기 화분에 담긴 특이한 선인장을 두고 갔다. 쪽지나 편지도 없었다.

At noon, one of her [servant / servants] came to Trysdale’s door and left the strange cactus in the red earthen jar. There [was / were] no note, no message.

식물에는 단지 어떤 외국어인지 또는 식물학상의 이름인지를 보여 주는 이름표가 있었다.

He waited until night, but her answer did not come. With his pride so deeply [wounding / wounded], he did not try [visiting / to visit] her.

이틀 후, 그들은 저녁 모임에서 우연히 만났다. 그들은 서로 공손하게 인사했지만, 그녀는 그가 무엇을 생각하고 있는지 신호를 기다리며 그를 숨죽인 채 바라보았다.

Two days later, they met by chance at a dinner. They greeted each other politely, but she looked at him breathlessly, [waiting / waited] for some sign of [what / that] he was thinking.

“고맙지만, 차는 사양할게.” Trysdale이 말했다.

“Trysdale, what in the world is wrong with you? You look sad. Look at me. I came 2,000 miles on a crowded old boat all the way from South America to attend my only little sister’s wedding. Now she’s gone, but I’m still enjoying the night. Come now! Let’s [have / had] some tea together.”

“I don’t want [some / any] tea, thanks,” said Trysdale.

“No,” said Trysdale, with a trace of a bitter smile. “Is it Spanish?” “Yes. The people there think the leaves [look / look like] they are reaching out and telling you [come / to come]. They call it ventomarme. In English it means ‘Come and take me.’”
