What are the causes behind the spread of diseases in our current age despite of the large-scale progress that humanity has achieved in the medical sciences?

It has been reported that when Ibn Masawayih, the doctor, heard the saying of Allah’s Messenger, peace be upon him, “A human being fills no worse vessel than his ----------------------------------”, he said: “If people had followed these words, they would have save themselves from diseases and the hospitals chemists’ shops would have run out of business”.
