By the 1970s, the struggle had already

been dominating American

foreign policy for decades.

President Nixon, although

largely considered to have

been weak with his

domestic policy, is largely

considered to have been

very strong in the realm of

foreign policy.

The struggle for women’s rights

certainly did not originate in the 1970s.

Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady

Stanton and Sojourner Truth had been

fighting for suffrage and other rights

generations earlier. But the 1970s offered

women’s rights advocates an opportunity

to take advantage of the successes of the

Black Civil Rights movement of the 1950s

and 1960s. Extreme advocates were

known as feminists.

The American women’s rights

movement of the 1970s became a

global effort by the middle of the

decade. Beginning in 1975, the United

Nations began to hold conferences on

women’s rights to discuss global

issues.

The first major post-Cold War conflict that the U.S.

became involved was the Gulf War. Starting over oil and a breach of

Kuwait’s sovereignty, the U.S. led coalition forces in repelling Sadaam

Hussein’s Iraqi forces. It also represented the first war that was brought

live to American televisions.

Just as the close of World War 2 led to an economically booming

1950s, the close of the Cold War led to an economically booming 1990s

in the United States. In fact, the Dow Jones climbed above 10,000 for

the first time toward the end of the decade.

A newly defined generation, born from roughly

1981-2002 grew up in the 1990s. This so-called “Generation Y” (since it

came after Generation X) was also called the Millennial Generation,

since they came of age near the turn of the new millennium (2000AD).

Generation Z refers to anyone born from 2003 to the present. Several other

names are being considered for this generation, including: iGeneration, Pluralist

Generation, New Lost Generation, Generation@, Net-Generation, Digital Negative

Generation, Homeland Generation and Scholars Generation.

But even among the other 97% of Americans who are not vegetarian or

vegan, the 2000s has witnessed an enormous shift toward healthy eating and

active lifestyles. Thanks in part to documentaries such as Supersize Me (2004)

and Fast Food Nation (2006), many have worked to draw attention to just how

devastating fast food can be to one’s health.

It is an understatement to say that the advent of social

media has been a ‘game changer’. Social Media has

changed culture so drastically, and it happened (is

happening) so quickly, that it is difficult to accurately

describe the changes.
