Reading Comprehension

On today’s Techno-Talk podcast, I’m going to talk about the world’s first mobile phone – the Motorola Dyna-Tac. It was developed by an American named Martin Cooper in the early 1970s, and he then used his new gadget to make the first mobile phone call in history, on the 3rd of April 1973. The Dyna-Tac was portable – you could carry it but not for a long time! After all, it weighed more than a kilogram. It also took ten hours to charge the Dyna-Tac’s battery, and then you could only talk for about thirty minutes. And you couldn’t connect to the web without a modem in those days.

The first Dyna-Tacs were rather expensive gadgets. When Motorola started selling them, they cost about $4,000, so only rich business people or celebrities used them.Cheaper phones appeared later, in the late 1990s, and then mobile phones became everyday gadgets. Nowadays about 75% of the world’s population has got a mobile phone, and many people have got more than one. How times change!
