Adam and Eve’s temptation

Adam and Eve were tempted in the Garden of Eden by the serpent (devil) to eat the fruit in the middle of the garden from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. The devil made them doubt that God was hiding something from them and since they desired this knowledge, they ate the forbidden fruit. Because of their pride and rebellion, they got separated from God – a total breakdown in their relationship with Him, who is the source towards a fulfilled life. Adam and (a)   lost their original purity of heart.

In his human nature Jesus was able to stand before sin and did not fall into temptation. He did not fall for the false promises of the devil. The reality of temptation is usually a twist of of the truth but at the end it leaves us empty. We, as sons and daughters of Adam and Eve are vulnerable to temptation. It is through Jesus that we are able to resist temptation. This will open the way for us to live as free persons in Christ and not as slaves of (a)   .

Jesus promised to be present in the world and he kept his promise through the (a)   .

1. Parish church building. – built in a particular style, adorned with beautiful paintings, sculptures etc.. With this meaning, working for and within the church is understood to mean becoming involved in the upkeep of the church building. Whereas, the activity of the church should really be teaching cathecism, helping the elderly/poor and taking part in different voluntary organizations in and of the parish.

2. Hierarchy – pope-cardinals-bishops-priests – constituting governing body of the church. With this meaning, the responsability and life of the church lies solely on these persons. An agency/organization – that provides mass, confession, baptism, funeral celebrations, where to worship God, This show church as a sort of supermarket where one asks for a particular service and then get on with their life independent of the Church community. The true understanding of the Church should include family, education, work and recreation and any other activity and event in our social life.

Gentiles Name given by Jews to all other races such as Romans, Greek. Strict laws stated that jews had to live apart from non-jews. Many Jews believed that these pagans lay outside the care of God but prophets believed that God called hiw people to be “light to lighten the Gentiles” to make God known to them. Some Greeks and Romans admired the Jewish religion and attended services at synagogues though they could not accept Jewish laws and become Jews. Jews had strict laws about trading with Gentiles, entering a Gentile house and eating with a Gentile.

Pharisees Not priests or holy men but very devout laymen. Their name means “separate one” for they kept strictly aparat from pagan people like Romans and Greeks. Like Sadduccees they lived strictly by the old written laws of Moses. They also lived by unwritten laws and customs which had grown up by them. They believed in angels, spirts, and in life after death. They lived by their laws in every detail- they give a tenth of everything they have to God. They were honoured for their devotion ot God and they helped to keep Jewish religion alive. Many of them were good men but God saw through their insincerity of others.

Samaritans Lived in Samaria. Jews travelling between the north and the south would go across the River Jordan to avoid Samaritans. They came from Jews who had married foreigners and there had been quarrels between pure Jews and Samaritans for centuries. They had built their own temple on Mt Gerizim and used only part of the Jewish Bible. By the time of Jesus, the jews hated Samaritans and wanted nothing to do with them. But Jesus ministered the Samaritans and made one of them to be a hero in the famous – the Good Samaritan.

Tax collectors Tax collectors and money lenders were very unpopular because many of them were corrupt. Besides Temple tax, the Jews had to pay various taxes to the Romans, which they bitterly hated. Wealthy merchants often bribed tax collectors to let them off their taxes. A Jew paid the Romans for the right to collect their taxes. He took all he could from his fellow in order to make a good profit for themselves . The Jews hated the tax collectors because they considered them as traitors of the Jewish people and for making money out of them. Zaccheus was a tax collector who changed his life upon meeting Jesus.

The Messiah who was to realise this (a)   of Salvation was Jesus. Through Him, with Him and in Him, humanity was to be saved through our participation in the new union, which God is offering with Him and between ourselves.

One Flock – led by one shepherd.

Since most of His listeners were shepherds, Jesus compares the Church to a flock (of sheep) that needs to be led by only one shepherd. They can also understand the closeness shared between them – the sheep trust the shepherd completely and go wherever he leads them.

When the hired man sees a wolf, he runs away and leaves the sheep on their own as he does not care about them. But the shepherd is willing to (a)   for them.

The New Family of God – not a parable but event in Jesus’ life.

Jesus did not consider His followers as merely disciples but as His own family. “Look” Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does what my Father in heaven wants him to do is my brother, my sister, and my mother.”

Within this New family of God, the members are no longer only made up of the earlier Jewish chosen people. Jesus made it clear that anyone who accepts Him and (a)   according to His message is considered to be part of this New Family.

A man sowed good seed in his field but at night an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. When plants grew, weeds showed up. The man’s servants asked him if they should do and pull up the weeds. The (a)   told them to let the wheat and the weeds both grow together and during harvest, the workers would pull up the weeds first and burn them and the they would gather the wheat.

Parable of the fishing net.

The church is a human institution made up of humans and so includes saints and sinners alike.

Unrepentant sinners – those who harden their hearts instead of seeking God’s forgiveness and blessing.

We have behaved as saints as sinners in our lives. Important to realise that each of our lives is a journey of conversion – of doing what God invites us to and avoid what harms us ora any part of God’s creations.

Church will always have sinners. As we follow this journey of life towards God, there are times when we make a mess of things and fall into sin. However our focus should always remain the example of Jesus and His invitation to show us who God is.

Besides preaching about what the Church should look like, Jesus calls and welcomes the disciples who were to be its first members

Apostle – one chosen by Jesus to carry a particular responsibility in the community. There were 12.

One living Body

Christ is the Head and all Christians who freely freely choose to follow Him and the other different members of the body. Christ is united in that body. It has one aim and its different parts are independent. This is structure of the Church as Christ intended it to be.

Inspired by the Holy Spirit, St Paul was the first to understand that the special link, which the Early Christians felt with Jesus, was so because Jesus had established the Church as one body, as His own Body.

We become so close to Christ that we become “One with Him”. This is why the Church is often also referred to as the Mystial Body of Christ.

Christ – One Aim

Since Church is Christ’s Body, it also has Christ’s mission. The church continues working through Christ. Christ still continues to work today, through his Body, which is the Church.

Gift of Celibacy – When someone freely decides to five himself in order to devote oneself wholeheartedly to the building of the Kingdom of God. These people normally teach cathecism in parishes, take care of formation groups for young people, working with the sick and the elderly, going overseas to work in poorer countries. The life of a person who decides not to marry is not a wasted life..

When this complete consecration to God is taken publicly it is called a religious profession taken by nuns, priests, borthers, members of secular institutions. They generally live in communities and commit themselfes to poverty, obedience, chastity.
