Read the text “The Learning Process.” Choose the two kinds of processes.
The Learning Process
Learning is a process. We go from step one to step two and so on. Some learning processes are intuitive, which means that there is a logic that we follow naturally. There are some other processes that we need to learn and we do that by following oral or written instructions.
Words that give instructions are action words. You know them by the name of verbs. Verbs say what we need to do; for example, read, write or repeat. If we pay attention to verbs, we know exactly what we are asked to do. If you get lost in a task, go back to the verb in the rubric. This action word is the key to keeping the process going!
This action word is the key to keeping the process going!
Learning by intuition: There is a logic to some processes that we follow naturally.
Learning by following instructions: We need to learn some processes and we do that by following oral or written instructions.
Read the text “Reading Tasks.” What strategies can you use to help you understand the meaning of the words that you read?
Reading Tasks
When we have a reading task, we know what our main activity is: reading. However, we are often asked to read a text in order to complete other tasks. For example: analyzing, writing, classifying and so on. This is how we know what to focus on. We also know what we are expected to do.
Reading tasks require that we pay attention to written information. It is important to understand the words that we read but if we do not know some of them, we can use some strategies. We can guess their meaning by the context in which they occur. We can also look them up in a dictionary. We can ask for help. In any case, we must clarify our doubts before taking the next step.
I can't look them up in a dictionary.
I can guess their meaning by the context in which they occur.
I can't ask for help.
Read the text “The Rock Cycle” and choose the right options according to the text. Choose one or two sentences.
The Rock Cycle
Weathered rocks produce sediments. Erosion transports these sediments to sedimentary basins. There, they form layers. The more and heavier the sediments fill the basins, the deeper the layers go. Diagenesis is the name of these physical and chemical processes. Diagenesis changes layers of sediments into new rocks.
Igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic rocks can become any other type of rock. It depends on the conditions of the environment. In some areas underneath, rocks are pushed up by other rocks.
When rocks reach the surface, the weather causes the production of sediments, leading to layer formation in a continuous cycle. This cycle of rock formation in the crust of the Earth is called the rock cycle. The cycle of rocks never ends.
Diagenesis changes layers of sediments into new rocks.
Igneous rocks can only transform into igneous rocks.
Erosion transports sediments to outer space.
The weight of sediments pushes layers down.
Read the text “Uses of Rocks” and answer the question.
Uses of Rocks
Rocks are natural resources with many uses. When used directly, rocks do not need any industrial processing. We can just cut or grind them into gravel. Rocks are also used as industrial raw materials to make ceramics, glass and cement.
The construction and decoration of buildings and houses use rocks without industrial processing. Sidewalks are examples of this. Rocks can also be cut and then carved or polished to get the finish that we want. This is how we turn them into ornamental rocks like marble and granite.
Sand and gravel are construction aggregates which come from mines. We mix them with construction materials such as cement to form concrete or mortar. Mortar and concrete also come from rocks. Mortar is composed of cement and fine sand, while concrete is composed of cement, gravel and sand. Apart from being a very useful natural resource, rocks also contain valuable minerals such as iron. They can be used for water filtration as well.
