Confucianism believes in the Five Cardinal Virtues namely; Ren, Yi, Li, Zhi, and Xin.

Wolmae is a former Kisaeng, a female singer or entertainer.

Yi Mongryong first saw Chunhyang in a swing near the Ojak-kyo bridge. He approached the lovely maiden and asked for her hand in marriage.

Yi Mongryong went to the former kisaeng Wolmae to formally ask Chunhyang's hand in marriage. She agreed to it as long as he makes a pledge to return and marry her daughter after the civil service exam.
