Second Stage: Experimental Activities

Now you are going to watch a video narration of the poem Mother to Son by Langston Hughes, it is a poem about a mother talking about life’s challenges. After watching the video, you should be able to put yourself to the son’s situation and be able to understand why the mother talks about life like that. Do you think you will have the same feeling as the son in the poem?

Third Stage: Intake Response Activities

Work with your chosen partner. Read the poem silently, after reading choose a notable lines or phrase for and share it with your partner, tell him/her why that line impacts you the most, share your personal experience with each other.

Fourth Stage: Development Activity

Imagine that you are the kid in the poem, make a poem, a poem serves as a response to what the mother tells you. After making a poem, talk among your class and decide or choose the best poem and perform an online class speech choir. (Think of a way to do it online, you can collect individual video of the class and edit it and put it together to make it a speech choir, it’s up to you, be creative)

Fifth Stage: Input Response Activity

Analyze the poem, re-read the poem and focus on the words used by the author. Find words that determines the personality of the mother or the speaker in the poem. Describe the mother in the poem, provide evidence from the text (such us words or phrase/lines).
