Not So Civil
“Jacob, take your men into the cornfield with their remaining gunfire and supplies. Do not leave until you have taken out all of the enemy’s men,” the General ordered.
Jacob followed the commander’s orders and led his men into the cornfields. Cannon blasts roared through the day as his men scooched and shimmied to their positions. Men were dropping like flies. The Union soldiers fought back with rifles and their own artillery cannons. Despite the firing and loud thuds of cannon balls hitting the ground, Jacob and his men upheld their end of the battle. The General knew he could count on Mr. Chance and his devout soldiers.
Shots were fired back-and-forth all day as the scorching sun beat through the men’s wool uniforms. Sweat dripped from the soldier’s brows as they aimed their rifles across the fields at their opponents. An entire full day of shooting and blasting ended in the most losses for this war between the North and South. Thousands of lifeless bodies lay inches from one another. The few men left in Jacob’s army trudged to the General and waited in distress for his next orders.
The long, horrific day the men endured seemed to squeeze one victory from their fighting—an end to slavery.
