Paragraph 1

Paul considers giving Henry his fortune after hearing his greedy children argue about their inheritance. When Paul gave Henry a simple marble, “Paul had to smile at the way Henry marveled over the marble, rolling it in his palm, holding it up to the light—he showed more gratitude for this small gift that Paul had received from all his children combined for a long time. He sighed for a third time that morning…giving his fortune to his children rankled, especially when he compared them to Henry—he was truly a treasure in the making” and “Treasure, Paul thought, tipping his head to the side and pursing his lips thoughtfully.” It was painful for Paul to overhear his children talking about his inevitable death because they clearly cared far less about their father than the money Paul would leave them after his death. When Henry’s visit interrupts the hurtful conversation Paul is overhearing, he begins to recognize that only Henry’s love and attention is real and not based on what Paul can give him, so he begins considering rewriting his will.

After Henry left, Paul opened the safe in his study and pulled out a large bag of loose jewels. When he pulled his jewels out of the safe and rolled them in his hand, it parallels the way “Henry marveled over the marble, rolling it in his palm…show[ing] more gratitude for this small gift than Paul had received from all his children combined for a long time.” At that point as Paul began to make the connection between his own love of jewels and Henry’s enjoyment of the marble—if Henry thought the marbles were beautiful, he would probably enjoy the gems even more. Because he had just overheard his children talking about the way their valued Paul’s money more than their father’s life, he began considering that it might be time to change his will.
