In paragraph 2, the story states, “How much had she seen, Theodoric queried to himself; and in any case what on earth must she think of his present posture.” This quote shows that he was more concerned about the woman's opinion and thoughts of him rather than the immediate “issue” at hand. This passage is portrayed from the perspective of the cashier at a grocery store, and it changes how the events in the text are described by introducing a heightened level of contrast between the bikini girls and everyday shoppers. In paragraph 4, the cashier introduces one of the girls as “The Queen” and thinks to himself “She held her head so high her neck, coming up out of those white shoulders, looked kind of stretched, but I didn’t mind. The longer her neck was, the more of her there was.” This thought from the cashier shows how attentive he was to the actions of this girl, and it emphasizes his perspective because he repeatedly described her with radiant, overly optimistic adjectives while putting down the other two. In paragraph 5 the same cashier thinks “You could see them, when Queenie’s white shoulders dawned on them, kind of jerk, or hop, or hiccup, but their eyes snapped back to their own baskets and on they pushed.” This shows how different this girl was from all the other shoppers; it emphasizes how the cashier’s fantasizing over this girl provided an escape from the monotony of scanning canned fruits and milk jugs. In conclusion, the cashier fantastically described the “Queen” of the girls and her actions because she was so different from everyone else and provided him with a way to distract himself from boring cashier duties.
