Cultural change has come about in Texas through migration of people. Different groups who settled in Texas over time brought their own cultures and customs. They spoke different languages, practiced different religions, and brought new ideas about politics. The different groups learned from one another and blended their cultural traditions. Trade is another important way cultural change came about in Texas. For example, in the 1500s French and Spanish traders brought new items to Texas such as metals (bells, tools, and weapons), which the Native Americans traded hides and furs for. Individuals, including Stephen Austin, brought about cultural change as their leadership led to eventual independence for Texas. Other Texas individuals such as Jack Kilby made an important invention that greatly affected the way people live. His computer chip revolutionized the use of home/office computers and led to the development of portable cell phones.
