The story is unique in that while it is told in various formats, it's mostly written like a _________________.

In his opening statements to the jury, Asa Briggs, James King’s lawyer, suggests that the state’s  witnesses are unreliable. Specifically, he says that Petrocelli’s “key witnesses are among the  most self-serving, heartless people imaginable. Some of them will begin their  _____________ by swearing that they are criminals..."

In a flashback meant to show a glimpse of Steve’s character, Steve throws a rock that  accidentally hits a guy. Tony later says to Steve, “I didn’t throw that rock. You threw  it.” In reply, Steve says, “I didn’t say you threw it. I just said ___________.”

In his cell, readers see Steve discussing his trial with some of the other prisoners,  including an older prisoner. Steve tells the men that he’s innocent. The older prisoner says,  “Yeah, well, somebody got to do some ____________. They’re going to lock somebody up”.

The defense needs to show that Cruz is lying about the crime. When O’Brien cross-examines  him, she asks if he is a member of a gang. Cruz says no, but soon admits that he is. She continues by asking Cruz what he had to do to get in the gang. He admits that he had to  _______________with a knife.

Steve writes about the visit from his father: “What was going on between us, me being his son and him  being my dad, is pushed down and something else is moving up in its place. It’s like a man looking  down to see his __________ and seeing a __________ instead”

Evans also tells us that Steve gave the all clear signal, but he didn't say what that signal was. In fact, he says:

Steve, feeling desperate, writes this in his July 14th notes: “Here I am, maybe on the verge of losing my  life, or the life I used to have. I can understand why they take your ________ and ________ away  from you when you’re in jail”.

Because O’Brien can’t coach Steve on what to say on the witness stand, she thinks of the next best  thing. In a practice session, O’Brien turns over a ________ anytime she doesn’t like one of Steve’s  answers.

In his final notes, written 5 months later, Steve tells readers that his mother doesn’t understand the  films he’s been making, and that his father, “with tears in his eyes, held me close and said that he was  thankful that I did not have to go to jail. He moved away, and the distance between us  seemed to grow bigger and bigger. I understand the distance,” Steve writes. “My father is no longer  sure of ____________”.

A reoccurring theme in the novel is how Steve perceives himself and is perceived.  This is most evident when he  poses one final question. He writes, “When  Miss O’Brien looked at me, after we had won the case, what did she see that caused her to turn away?  What did she see?”

Based on this question and what we've read in the novel, what could we say O'Brien saw?
