Barn Owl Senses

Our five senses carry information about our environment to our brain. We find food with our sense of smell, and our taste buds react to that smell allowing us to taste. We can feel something is too hot with our sense of touch. Images are received through our eyes, and we can hear sounds with our sense of hearing. The same is true for animals. The barn owl, for example, has excellent vision and hearing for catching prey. Barn owls hunt mostly at night, so they rely heavily on their senses to find food. Their large eyes let in more light than the average nocturnal animal, so their sense of vision is very good.

Owls’ eyes are large compared to the size of their body. Owls are able to see very well in the dark because their large eyes let in a lot of light. How does the owl see a specific object like a mouse in the dark?

a)

1. Light bounces off the mouse.

2. Light enters the eye through an opening at the center.

3. Light strikes the back of the owl’s eye.

4. Receptors react to the light and send signals to the brain.

5. The brain processes that the eye sees a mouse .
