A famous English-speaking author recently visited your town. The author’s books are very popular with young people, and so you think it is important to find out more about this person so that the general public are better informed. Write a text in which you report what the author is like, and what they have to say about what motivates them to write, and about why their work appeals to a teenage audience.

You have been attending a conference on the difficulties faced by communities trying to maintain customs and traditions in a rapidly changing world. You have been very struck by some of the ideas presented at the event, and wish to write a text in order to work out exactly what you think. You have read an article in your local newspaper which suggested that, because of teenagers’ sleep patterns, it would be beneficial to start the school day at a later time. You think this is an important issue, which requires public discussion. Write a text in which you describe the experiences of you and your fellow students, explain possible solutions, and give your overall opinion on the topic.

The principal of your school is proposing to reduce the length of the school’s main holiday. This matter is to be discussed at the next Parent Teacher Association meeting. You have a strong opinion about the proposal (whether for or against). Write a text to argue your opinion - you should describe the reasons given for the proposal, discuss how strong those reasons may be, and argue that your opinion is the right one.

You have recently downloaded a new application (or “app”) for your mobile phone that you enjoyed but it had some problems. You are concerned that the designer of the app should know about  both the good elements of the app, but that changes should be made to make it better. Write a text in which you describe your experience of the app, both the good aspects and the unsatisfacory aspects, and then explain what improvements you would recommend.

You recently watched a documentary that you thought was both entertaining and informative. You think that it is a model of what a good documentary should be. Write a text which describes the documentary in general terms, explains specifically how it was both entertaining and informative, and argue why this shows how documentaries should be made.

You went on holiday to a country you’ve always wanted to visit. Nothing went as you planned, and you came back home feeling disappointed and frustrated. You want to share your experience so that other people can avoid such problems. Write a text describing what you had initially planned, explaining what went wrong, and summarising the lessons that you have learned. 

Every year your school organizes an excursion to an English-speaking country to learn about its way of life, and its customs and traditions. However, the cultural element of the trip this year was weak and boring. As a senior student who has been on three of these excursions, you are well able to compare them. Write a text which describes the limited experience of the country's way of life, contrasts these with the different experiences in previous years, and explains why the previous experiences were more interesting and stimulating.

You came across the following statement in an article: “When it comes to understanding other people’s behaviour, children whose parents come from different cultural backgrounds are more open-minded than those whose parents share the same cultural background.” This has intrigued you, and you want to work out your responses to the statement clearly and convincingly. Write a text in which you describe the assumptions behind the basic statement, explain arguments for and against, and then present your considered conclusion.

There is a national campaign to lessen the negative impact of humans on the environment. You think it is very important that the management of your school should make real changes in support of this campaign. Write a text in which you describe areas in which the school is damaging the environment, explain specific ways in which your school could use technology to prevent such damage, and argue how such changes would benefit the school. 

The only cinema showing English language films in your local area has just closed down because of a decline in ticket sales. You think it is important to inform people fully about this event. Write a text in which you give the factual details about the closure, explain why the cinema has closed, and present the reactions of the local community.
