The OT decides that the child needs to work on the skills of hand separation in order to use a power grip for feeding. The OT engages the child in a variety of activities that require this skill and then when the skill has improved, the OT tries the spoon again.

The OT determines that the child has limited strength in the oral muscles for chewing. The OT engages the child in oral motor games to increase strength for chewing.

The OT sets up a variety of play activities that require the child to repeat grasp of an object. The OT provides 1-3 word cues, feedback, and variable practice.

The OT provides an adapted utensil that will provide more support to allow a better grasp and more control.

The OT determines that the child is overly sensitive to some aspect of the food (touch, smell, taste) and decides to first try deep touch pressure and proprioceptive input to reduce sensitivity before introducing the food again.
