CHILDBIRTH
Childbirth is the process by which the foetus leaves the mother's body. It occurs after 40 weeks of pregnancy and occurs in various stages.
1. Dilation This begins with contractions of the uterus that cause the cervix to dilate until it reaches 10 cm. During this stage, the amniotic sac breaks and the fluid is released. This is known as the waters breaking. This stage can last between 8 and 14 hours in first-time mothers.
2. Expulsion of the foetus The contractions of the uterus are now stronger and longer to help push the foetus out through the vagina. After the baby is born, the umbilical cord is clamped and cut. This stage lasts about 30 minutes.
3. Expulsion of the placenta At birth, babies weigh about 3 kg and measure about 50 cm. Around 15 minutes after the baby is born, the contractions of the uterus expel the placenta.
