Impact of Immigration on the United States
Between 1870 and 1910, more than 20 million immigrants moved to the United States. A large number of those immigrants came to the Northeast. Some immigrants came from northern and western Europe. American factories needed more workers and these immigrants had skills that were needed.
Later immigrants came mostly from southern and eastern Europe. Many left their home countries to escape war, hunger, and discrimination. However, they lacked the skills needed to work in the factories. They were willing to work for less money.
Some Americans feared that immigrants would take their jobs. Many immigrant groups were discriminated against and treated unfairly. Some places would not hire immigrants from specific countries.
The large number of immigrants also meant that there was not enough housing. Immigrants were crowded into areas of the cities. Sometimes these immigrants worked in sweatshops. A sweatshop was a factory where people worked long hours under terrible conditions for very low wages. Many sweatshops were in the clothing industry.
