Symbolization: the process by which elements and their attributes are represented by graphically stylized marks or signs, called symbols, and sometimes by labels.

Map scale: this is an essential concept in map reading. It refers to the relationship between the distance on a map and the corresponding distance on the ground. To create a map on paper accurately, we make everything much smaller. We, therefore, scale down the actual size of the geographic features.
