The Party

1 Every year in May, Oklahoma has a party in McAlester. This spring social event is an Italian Festival. The word "Italian" means someone who comes from the country of Italy. The word "festival" means a party. Many people living in McAlester, and the small town of Krebs near McAlester, have Italian ancestry.

2 The people with Italian roots live in this area because this is where their great grandparents chose to live. That happened over a hundred years ago! Many Italians came to Oklahoma to work in the coal mines, which were close to McAlester and Krebs.

3 Then something interesting happened. The Oklahomans wanted to thank these people. They wanted to thank them for coming to Oklahoma, so they agreed to have a party every year. That is how the festival began.

5 Children of all ages come with their parents to the party. There are games to play outside for the children, and the grownups have their games as well. There is sound of children laughing as they run and play. The sound of adult laughter blends with the music. Everyone is invited to dance or just sit back and eat as they listen to the music.
