A drawing that is mainly built on memory and on-spot observation and not to scale is known as a sketch. When we need a rough drawing of an area to locate a particular place with respect to other places, then we use a sketch of a map. A sketch of a map lowers down the irrelevant details and increases major geographic points. It shows things that are sometimes hidden in maps.

Well, we can take an example. Let us suppose that we want to go to a market near one of our friend's houses, but we do not know the way to the market. Our friend may draw a rough drawing to show the way to the market. Such a rough drawing is drawn without scale, so it is known as a sketch map.

One way to show the difference that scale makes is to compare a series of products at different scales. Each image shows what 1 centimeter on the map represents in the real world. So, a 1:2,000,000 scale shows kilometers, a 1:50,000 scale shows kilometers, a 1:25,000 scale shows kilometers, a 1:10,000 scale shows meters, and a 1:1,250 scale shows meters.
