By showing Birling's false prediction about the Titanic, Priestley shows how Mr Birling is typical for the time of writing as everyone thought the Titanic was unsinkable.
By showing how foolish and ignorant he is with all his wrong predictions, it makes his statements and beliefs about capitalism (which Priestley is criticising) also seem ridiculous.
