"Crownpoint Navajo Rug Auction"
Our rug auction and craft sale are the finest on the Navajo Reservation. Leave behind the usual tourist hustle and bustle and come to see hundreds of exquisite handmade Navajo rugs. Our tribe's rugs are world famous. They can be seen in museums and fine homes everywhere. Our Navajo rugs are as beautiful as the New Mexican land on which we live.
Before the actual rug auction, you can hold the rugs in your hands and appreciate their complex weaves and fibers up close. Some sell for fifty dollars or less, and some sell for thousands of dollars. Even if you don't buy anything, you are in for a treat just seeing and touching these lovely traditional rugs. Each rug is unique.
The craft sale is held before and during the auction. Many Native American craftspeople will display their wares. Many long hours have been devoted to creating these inspired pieces. You will be astounded at the original designs of jewelry, pottery, beadwork, and other items.
Many pieces of jewelry are not expensive. If you bought these pieces of jewelry elsewhere, you would have to pay two or three times as much. The pottery and beadwork exhibits show astonishing and rare designs. They reveal the amazing artistic talent of the Navajo people.
The sale of rugs and crafts is a major source of income for our tribe. If you make a purchase from us, you will be giving yourself a precious gift as well as helping to preserve the life and art of an ancient native people.

“Air Force One”
(excerpted)
In 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt called for the creation of the Presidential Pilot's Office. It was asked to provide air transportation to the President and his staff.
For most of the next 20 years, various airplanes were used for presidential air travel. They were propeller-powered aircraft. In 1962, the first jet aircraft, a Boeing 707, was purchased for use as Air Force One.
The President currently uses two Boeing 747-200B aircraft. Their tail numbers are 28000 and 29000. In addition, they have the Air Force designation VC-25A. When the President is aboard either craft, or any other Air Force aircraft, the radio call sign is “Air Force One.”
While on the aircraft, the President and staff have access to a full range of services. These include secure and non-secure voice and data communications. The President is also able to use photocopying, fax, printing, and word processing.
These aircraft are maintained and operated by the Presidential Airlift Group. This unit is part of the Air Mobility Command's 89th Aircraft Wing, based at Andrews Air Force Base in Suitland, Maryland. The VC-25A is capable of flying halfway around the world without refueling. It can hold more than 70 passengers.

"Canyon de Chelly National Monument"
One of the most beautiful and historically interesting sites to visit in America is Canyon de Chelly National Monument in Arizona. The monument contains three enormous canyons with steep sandstone walls that rise to 1000 feet. The walls’ colors change beautifully as sunlight moves across the canyons. At the base of the stone walls are ruins of primitive Indian habitations. Higher up on the cliffs are ancient Pueblo houses carved out of rock.
Wandering tribes roamed here 2,500 years ago. About 2,000 years ago, the ancient Anasazi Pueblo first appeared in the canyon, living in rock crevices and brush shelters. Within 500 years, the Pueblo Indians began living here in underground dwellings. They created pottery and planted corn, squash, and beans.
A few hundred years later, the Pueblo constructed houses above ground, perched on high stone cliffs. These Anasazi Pueblo people were very likely driven out of the canyons by drought in the 12th and 13th centuries.
Modern Navajo people arrived around 1700 AD. The Spanish also arrived during these years, and they brought horses, cows, and sheep with them. The Navajo farmed the land and raised sheep which they obtained by trading with the Spanish.
Today, Navajos continue to live in Canyon de Chelly. They still farm and raise sheep and goats. They are still trying to follow the old ways of their culture.
The National Monument provides rough trails as well as paved roads for access to the views. If you wish to leave the paved roads, you must have a Navajo guide. Check at the visitor center to obtain a guide.
Which statement from a vacationer to Canyon de Chelly conflicts with information in the text?
a)
A.   "The thing that I was most impressed by at Canyon de Chelly were the colors. We spent the whole day there, and I was amazed at the fact that the colors of the sandstone canyon walls seemed to transform later in the afternoon," says Mary Woodlawn, Rhode Island.
b)
 B.   "My wife and I were told to stay on paved roads unless accompanied by a guide. However, we found out later that tourists are allowed to hike on the White House Ruin Trail without supervision," says David Sanders, Nevada.
c)
C.   "Despite living in the state for most of my life, I had never been to Canyon de Chelly. Last year, I decided to change that. I stayed in a nice hotel in Chinle, the town that is nearest to the canyon," says Zach Williams, Arizona.
d)
 D.   "While we did not have to pay a fee to enter the canyon, we did have to pay the Navajo tour guide who took us in. I thought the price was very reasonable given how much we learned about the canyon from him," says Melanie Green, North Dakota.

"The Life of Harriet Tubman"
In 1819, Harriet Tubman was born in the state of Maryland. Like her parents, who were both of African ancestry, she was a slave. As a youth, she was subjected to harsh treatment from white overseers. By the time she was six years old, she worked as a house servant. When she was in her teens she was sent to work in the fields, where she suffered a head injury from an overseer that would affect her the rest of her life.
At the age of 30, fearing she would be sold to slave owners who lived further south, she made her escape northward to freedom. She quickly discovered a network of safe houses that helped her reach Philadelphia, and then Canada. These safe houses were “stations” on a secret path northward known as the “Underground Railroad.” Sympathetic individuals who opposed slavery operated these stations and helped runaway slaves.
Tubman wanted to help others in her family to escape slavery, so she returned to the South 19 times over the course of a ten-year span, escorting around 300 slaves to freedom along the Underground Railroad. The tales of her exploits reveal a strong spiritual faith as well as a determination to protect those she was leading north and those who aided them. When the Civil War broke out, Tubman served as a soldier, spy, and a nurse. After the war, she settled in Auburn, New York, and switched her efforts to the campaign for women’s rights. She passed away in 1913.
Which statement from a historian contradicts information presented in the text?
a)
A.   Soon after her first marriage, Tubman changed her name from Araminta to Harriet, her mother's name.
b)
 B.   Tubman saw visions and suffered from seizures as a result of her head injury.
c)
 C.   Tubman was the first woman to lead an armed assault during the Civil War.
d)
D.   In fact, the number of slaves Tubman personally escorted to freedom is probably closer to 70.
