Liam
I work at a local supermarket on Saturdays and Sundays. At first, I just stacked shelves, but now I also help customers at the checkout. I didn’t expect to enjoy talking to so many people, but it’s actually improved my confidence. I use the money I earn to save for a trip to Australia next year. I’m also learning how to budget and manage my time better.

Sofia
My weekend job is at a café near my house. I usually work the morning shift, which means I have the afternoons free. I’ve always loved baking, and my manager recently let me design a new cupcake for the menu! It’s a small thing, but it made me feel proud. I sometimes post about my café work on social media, and my posts have even brought in new customers.

Ethan
Every weekend, I tutor younger students in maths. I didn’t think I’d be good at teaching, but it turns out I really enjoy helping others understand something difficult. I plan my lessons during the week so I’m ready when Saturday comes. I used to spend my weekends playing video games, but now I feel my time is more useful. I don’t earn much, but that’s not why I do it.

When I applied to join the debate team, I only did it to improve my speaking skills. I didn’t think I’d be any good, especially compared to others with more experience. But after losing my first competition, I focused on refining my technique and analysing feedback. Eventually, I started winning matches and even began mentoring new team members.

Volunteering at the hospital was emotionally demanding. I had to support patients, some of whom were very ill, and it was tough not to take that home with me. But over time, I developed strategies to stay calm and focused under pressure. It’s helped me not just there, but in many other parts of life too.

C.
During a community project, I was paired with someone I didn’t get along with at all. At first, we argued constantly, but we soon realised that neither of us could complete the task alone. We began to communicate more effectively, and surprisingly, we delivered one of the best projects in the group.

Photography was something I’d always enjoyed, but I never thought of it beyond a personal interest. Then I started taking portraits for friends, and gradually I began booking small events. I’ve learned how to work with clients, price my services, and build a portfolio — all things I never expected to do.

Moving to a new country for a summer programme sounded exciting — until I arrived and realised how difficult it would be to adjust. I didn’t speak the language fluently and felt out of place at first. But after a few weeks, I found new routines, made friends, and became more independent than I’d ever been at home.

Skateboarding

I’ve been skateboarding for about a year and a half now. Last year, I was the youngest competitor in a local street skateboarding contest! These days, I spend nearly all my free time at our town’s new skatepark — I hardly ever stay in to watch TV anymore.

Before this skatepark was built, the nearest one was 10 kilometres away. Some of my older friends used to go there, but my mum said I wasn’t old enough to travel that far. I tried skating on the pavements for a while, but I ended up hurting my arm when I fell. It also annoyed the people walking by, so I gave up. Now, I can go to the new skatepark in the evenings — it has bright lights, so it’s open at night too.

There’s also a skatepark at my school. It’s great exercise! But it’s not very safe for younger kids like my little brother, especially since older students use it for rollerblading and BMX biking. I think they like it more than the town park because it’s less crowded.

I’ve always done well in school, but I find skateboarding much more difficult! My favourite trick is jumping over boxes — it’s tough and takes a lot of focus, but I love it. My older sister is a skateboard coach, and one day I hope I can be like her. Not many girls skateboard where I live, so even though I really enjoy it, it can feel a bit lonely sometimes. I’d love to see more girls get involved!
