The Legend of Malin Kundang

Once upon a time, in a small village on the coast of West Sumatra, lived a poor woman and her son named Malin Kundang. They lived in hardship since Malin’s father had passed away when he was a baby.

As Malin grew older, he decided to go to the city to seek a better life. His mother was sad but agreed to let him go. She gave him her blessings and prayed for his success.

Years passed, and Malin became a successful merchant. He married a beautiful woman from a wealthy family. One day, he sailed to his hometown with his wife. His mother, hearing the news, was so happy and rushed to the harbor to see her son.

However, Malin was ashamed of his poor mother and denied knowing her. He even insulted her in front of his wife and crew. Heartbroken, his mother cursed him, turning him into stone.

To this day, people can see a rock on the beach of Padang that is believed to be Malin Kundang.
