Part D: Reading Comprehension — The Mysterious Red Panda (41–50)

Read the passage and answer the questions.

Reading Comprehension: The Mysterious Red Panda Despite its name, the red panda is not closely related to the giant panda. In fact, it belongs to its own distinct family, Ailuridae, making it a truly unique species. Native to the temperate forests of the Himalayas and certain regions of China and Myanmar, the red panda thrives in cool, high-altitude environments rich in bamboo. Roughly the size of a domestic cat, red pandas are known for their striking reddish-brown fur, bushy ringed tails, and masked faces, which resemble those of raccoons. These arboreal mammals are agile climbers, spending much of their lives in trees, where they forage for food and rest during the day. Although bamboo is their primary food source, red pandas also consume fruit, eggs, insects, and small mammals, making them omnivorous. Red pandas are solitary by nature and largely nocturnal or crepuscular—most active during twilight hours. Unfortunately, their population is rapidly declining. They are classified as endangered due to widespread habitat destruction, illegal wildlife trade, and climate change. As forests are cleared for agriculture and development, the red panda's habitat becomes increasingly fragmented, making survival more difficult. Conservationists are working tirelessly to protect this elusive species. Strategies include establishing protected areas, creating ecological corridors between fragmented forests, and raising awareness about the dangers of poaching. Captive breeding programs in zoos also play a critical role in increasing the red panda population and educating the public about its plight.
