📘 Worksheet: The Seminole Natives and the Trail of Tears

Reading Passage

Paragraph 1
The Seminole people lived in Florida for many years before the United States government forced them to leave their land. They were told to move into reservations. These reservations often had poor conditions, with little food, swampy land, and no freedom to live as they once did. Life on the reservations was difficult and unfair.

Paragraph 2
One important part of Seminole history is how they welcomed and protected enslaved African people who escaped from plantations. Many of these men, women, and children found safety with the Seminoles. Over time, they became part of the Seminole tribe, sharing in work, culture, and even joining in battles.

Paragraph 3
The Seminole people and the escaped Africans fought together against European and American oppression. In 1835, the U.S. army tried to force the Seminoles to leave Florida. Seminole warriors, led by the chief Osceola, ambushed a group of U.S. soldiers in what became known as the Dade Massacre. Almost all of the soldiers were killed. This marked the beginning of the Second Seminole War, one of the longest and hardest wars in U.S. history.

Paragraph 4
Despite years of fighting bravely, many Seminoles were eventually captured. Soldiers forced thousands of Seminoles to march hundreds of miles to new lands west of the Mississippi River. This forced relocation, caused by the Indian Removal Act of 1830, is called the Trail of Tears. The journey was long, hard, and full of suffering. Guerrilla Warfare: The Seminoles used the swamps and forests of Florida to hide and launch surprise attacks. U.S. Army Response: The U.S. sent thousands of soldiers over several years, but the difficult terrain and Seminole tactics made it extremely hard to defeat them. Capture of Osceola (1837): Osceola was captured under a flag of truce, which was a major blow to Seminole leadership.

Paragraph 5
On the Trail of Tears, many Native people grew sick, starved, or died along the way. Families were separated, and homes and lands were lost. Even through sadness and hardship, the Seminole people and other tribes showed courage and strength. Today, they are remembered for resisting oppression and keeping their culture alive.
