The sun was lowering behind the tall buildings, and the shadows were long across the Barrens.
Somewhere, far off, a train was passing — a slow, low, moaning sound that seemed to echo between the trees. The air was thick, heavy with the smell of summer rot: water, mud, something sweet and spoiled.

He could hear laughter. Not close. Not far, either.
It was the kind of laughter that didn’t sound happy. It was mean laughter.
He stopped walking and turned, but there was no one behind him. Only the half-dried footprints he had left in the dirt.

“Hey, fat boy,” the voice said softly.
He froze.
It wasn’t loud, not really — but it was close, right in his ear.

He wanted to run, but something made him stand still. The wind shifted, carrying that smell again — damp, iron, and something like the inside of a balloon that’s just been popped.

“You can’t hide down here forever.”

The voice seemed to come from the sewer tunnel ahead, though there was no one in sight. Only darkness. Deep, still, waiting.

He took a single step closer.
The air inside the tunnel was colder, though it was still summer. His heart was hammering so hard he could feel it in his fingertips.

And then — something moved in the black.

Just a shift. Just enough to see the suggestion of white. And red.

He thought it was a rag. Or maybe the reflection of sunlight on the water.

But then it smiled.

Někde daleko projížděl vlak — pomalý, hluboký, táhlý zvuk, který se odrážel mezi stromy. Vzduch byl těžký, plný pachů letního rozkladu: voda, bláto, něco sladkého a zkaženého.

Slyšel smích. Ne blízko. Ale ani ne úplně daleko.
Nebyl to veselý smích. Byl to zlý smích.
Zastavil se a otočil, ale za ním nikdo nestál. Jen půl vyschlé stopy, které zanechal v hlíně.

„Hej, tlusťochu,“ ozval se tichý hlas.
Ztuhl.
Nebyl hlasitý — ale byl blízko. Příliš blízko.

Chtěl se rozběhnout, ale něco ho přinutilo zůstat stát. Vítr se obrátil a přinesl ten pach znovu — vlhký, železitý, a trochu jako vnitřek balónku, který právě praskl.

„Nemůžeš se tady dole schovávat věčně.“

Hlas jako by přicházel z tunelu před ním, i když tam nikoho neviděl. Jen tma. Hluboká, nehybná, čekající.

Udělal krok vpřed.
Vzduch v tunelu byl chladnější, přestože byl pořád letní den. Srdce mu bušilo tak silně, že ho cítil až v konečcích prstů.

A pak — něco se v té černi pohnulo.

Jen nepatrně. Jen tolik, aby zahlédl náznak bílé. A rudé.

Myslel si, že je to hadr. Nebo možná odraz slunce na hladině vody.

Ale pak… se to usmálo.
