📖 Reading Passage – “The Creature Comes to Life” (from Frankenstein, Chapter 5)

"It was already one in the morning; the rain pattered against the windows, and my candle was almost burnt out, when, by the dim light, I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open. It breathed hard, and a convulsive motion shook its body. I had worked hard for nearly two years to bring life into this lifeless body. For this, I had deprived myself of rest and health. But now that I had finished, the beauty of my dream disappeared, and horror filled my heart.

The creature’s skin was yellow and could hardly cover the muscles beneath. His hair was shiny black, and his teeth were very white, but these features made the rest of his face even more terrible. His eyes seemed almost the same colour as the white sockets in which they were set, his skin stretched tight over his face, and his lips were thin and black."
