Independent Review Notes: Wastewater Management

Wastewater is used water from homes, businesses, and industries. It must be managed properly to protect public health, water quality, and the environment.

There are three main ways wastewater is managed:

• Reuse: Some wastewater, such as greywater from sinks, showers, and laundry, can be reused with little or no treatment. Greywater is often reused for irrigation or toilet flushing.

• Recycle: Wastewater can be treated and reused for non-drinking purposes. Some buildings use closed-loop systems that treat and reuse wastewater on-site.

• Discharge and treatment: Wastewater is transported to a treatment facility, treated, and then released into a water body.

Many communities use Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW). These systems are owned by cities or states and include sewer pipes and treatment plants. Treatment usually happens in stages:

• Primary treatment removes large solids.

• Secondary treatment uses bacteria to break down pollutants.

• Disinfection kills harmful microorganisms.

In areas without access to municipal systems, on-site wastewater systems (septic systems) are used. A septic system includes a septic tank, a distribution box, and a drainfield. Wastewater flows into the tank, where solids settle and liquids move into the soil for further treatment.

Soil conditions are important for septic systems. Tests such as percolation (perc) tests are used to measure how well soil absorbs water. Poor soil, high water tables, or lack of maintenance can cause system failure.
