What is a generic file type?

These formats allow you to save files so that they can be opened on any platform.
Some files such as those used by Microsoft Office -Excel(.xlsx),Word Documents(.docx) and Access databases are not generic.Its not possible to open these packages on other platforms.

Common Generic text files:

csv: comma-separated value file
.txt : A text file is not formatted and can be opened in any word processor.
.rtf : This is a text file type that saves some of the formatting within the text.
