Place Value/Rounding

Place value is the value of a digit based on its position within a number. Each position represents a different power of ten.

The digit in the tens place of 345 is 4.

The digit in the hundreds place of 298 is 2.

To round a number to the nearest hundred, look at the digit in the tens place. If it is 5 or greater, round up; if it is less than 5, round down.

450 rounded to the nearest hundred is 500.

To round a number to the nearest ten, look at the digit in the ones place. If it is 5 or greater, round up; if it is less than 5, round down.

43 rounded to the nearest ten is 40.

The sum of 600, 10, and 6 is 616.

In the number 7,482, the digit 7 is in the thousands place, so its value is 7,000.

In the number 3,256, the digit 3 is in the thousands place, so its place value is 3,000.
