What is an example of viscosity?

Ex. high viscosity = "thick" and tougher to pour

Oils = Sae 90 is thick (more viscosity) than Sae 90

Sae 90 = gear case of tractor Sae 30 = lawn mower engine

Sae stands for Society of Automative Engineers

What are Changes of State?

Changes of State are changing from one form to another

What's an example of changing state?

ex. ice to water (solid) to (liquid)

How do you change states?

You need to add or remove energy to change states

(cooling) remove energy liquid to solid gas to solid gas to liquid

(heating) add energy solid to liquid solid to gas liquid to gas

the process of turning from a liquid into a vapor (gas)

What is an example of Evaporation?

Ex. water moving up into clouds (liquid to gas)

What is condensation?

process of vapor gas in the air turns back into a liquid

Sublimation is changing from a solid to a gas directly

What is an example of Sublimation?

Ex. black ice to water vapor (solid to gas)

What are examples of Gases?

-lp for house heat -Oxygen (O2) gas to breathe -Hydroperoxyl (HO2) for fast cars (NOS) -Helium for balloons

What are the Particles like in Solid?

Close together, particles immobile

What are the particles like in Liquid?

somewhat close together, can slide past each other

What are the particles like in Gas?

Far apart, bounce around and don't touch each other

How hot or cold something is (actually how fast the particles of something are moving)

Volume is how much space something takes up

Pressure is the amount of force put on something (number of times particles hit the inside of a container)

What are Hadley cells?

Hadley Cells contain trade winds

What are Ferrel Cells?

Ferrel Cells contain westerlies - we have prevailing westerlies in Iowa

What are Polar Cells?

Polar Cells contain polar easterlies

What are the 3 circulation cells

Hadley Cells, Ferrel Cells, and Polar Cells

ITCZ = Intertropical Convergence Zone

What are the traits of ITCZ

-near the equator -low pressure area -migrates north in summer and south in winter (this shift causes the wet and dry seasons)

What is Ocean Circulation?

Ocean Circulation is the ocean absorbs a majority of the Earth's solar radiation (heat) *especially on the equator -these move a lot of heat on the earth

What does the Ocean act as?

The ocean acts as a conveyer belt -they transport warm water and precipitation *toward polls -they transport cold water from the poles *back toward the equator

Do the currents constantly flow?

Yes these currents constantly flow due to temperature change, gravity, surface winds, and the coriolis effect

Air Masses is air that has the same temperature and humidity

Where do Air Masses form?

These form primarily in high pressure zones which are mostly in polar and tropical regions

Where do Air masses commonly not form?

Air Masses DO NOT commonly form in Temperate zones (mid-latitudes) - masses travel through creating unusual weather

What role does the sun play in the water cycle?

warms the atmosphere,land, and water, makes water evaporate

cold airmasses tend to flow toward the eqautor

warm air masses tend to flow toward the polls

When do storms happen?

Produced when the air masses and land temperature weather conditions are different

What is an ex of storms happening

Ex. if cold air mass moves over warm ground, clouds form creating a thunderstorm -warm air mass over colder ground = fog

What role does gravity have on the water cycle?

causes precipitation to fall from the clouds and water to flow downward on land through watersheds
