Ecological Succession

Ecological succession is the process by which ecosystems change and develop over time, involving a series of progressive changes in species composition and community structure.

A pioneer community is the first group of organisms that colonize a barren or disturbed area, initiating the process of ecological succession.

The number of species typically increases as ecological succession progresses.

A climax community is a stable and mature ecological community that has reached the final stage of succession, characterized by a complex structure and a stable species composition.

Primary succession occurs in an area where no soil exists, such as after a volcanic eruption or glacial retreat, starting from bare rock.

Secondary succession occurs in areas where a disturbance has destroyed an existing community but left the soil intact, such as after a forest fire.

Lichens and mosses are often the first organisms to colonize bare rock in primary succession, helping to create soil by breaking down the rock and accumulating organic matter.

The correct order is: Rocks, Lichens & Mosses, Bushes & Shrubs, Trees.

Soil is crucial for supporting plant life; its development is a key factor in the progression from pioneer species to a climax community.

Disturbance can reset the succession process, leading to secondary succession, which can alter the trajectory and speed of community recovery.
