Quotation Marks

Quotation marks are punctuation marks used to indicate the exact words spoken or written by someone.

Use quotation marks to enclose direct speech, quotes, or titles of short works.

Place punctuation marks inside the quotation marks if they are part of the quoted material.

"I love reading!" said Sarah.

Use quotation marks around the question and place a question mark inside if it is part of the quote.

"Can we go to the park?" asked John.

Omitting punctuation at the end of a quote.

Use single quotation marks for the inner quote, e.g., "He said, 'Hello!'".

Place the exclamation mark inside the quotation marks if it is part of the quoted material.
