Standardized Math Review #1 (ratios and rates)

A ratio is a comparison of two quantities by division, showing how many times one value contains or is contained within the other.

A rate is a specific kind of ratio that compares two different units, such as miles per hour or cost per item.

To find the unit rate, divide the total quantity by the number of units. For example, if 6 candles cost $12, the unit rate is $12 ÷ 6 = $2 per candle.

The area (A) of a triangle is calculated using the formula: $$A = \frac{1}{2}bh$$ , where b is the base and h is the height.

A proportion is an equation that states two ratios are equal. To set it up, write two fractions and set them equal to each other, such as $$\frac{a}{b} = \frac{c}{d}$$ .

The cost per candle at Store ABC is $2.

The cost per candle at Store XYZ is $1.75.

Use the formula: Time = Distance ÷ Speed. If Mark runs 8 miles in 60 minutes, his speed is 8 miles/60 minutes.
