Comma Rules 1-4

To separate independent clauses when they are joined by coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).

When it connects two independent clauses in a compound sentence.

I wanted to go for a walk, but it started to rain.

Use a comma after an introductory phrase or clause that precedes the main clause.

After dinner, we went for a walk.

Use commas to separate three or more items in a list.

I bought apples, oranges, bananas, and grapes.

The Oxford comma is the final comma in a list of items, placed before 'and' or 'or'.

Use commas to set off non-essential clauses that provide additional information but are not crucial to the meaning of the sentence.

My brother, who lives in New York, is visiting us next week.
