Soil Types

Soil is the top layer of the Earth where plants grow. It is made up of tiny pieces of rock, minerals, and organic matter.

The three main types of soil are sand, silt, and clay.

Clay has the smallest particles.

Clay holds water the best because its tiny particles fit closely together.

Sand drains water quickly because its larger particles create spaces for water to flow through.

Humus is the dark, organic material in soil that helps plants grow.

Loamy soil, which is a mix of sand, silt, and clay, is best for growing vegetables.

Sandy soil feels gritty and has larger particles.

Clay soil feels smooth and sticky when wet.

Silt soil feels soft and powdery.
