Food Chain

A food chain is a sequence that shows how energy and nutrients flow from one organism to another in an ecosystem.

A producer is an organism, like a plant, that makes its own food through photosynthesis.

A consumer is an organism that eats other organisms for energy.

Herbivores (plant eaters), Carnivores (meat eaters), and Omnivores (eat both plants and animals).

An herbivore is a consumer that only eats plants.

A carnivore is a consumer that only eats other animals.

An omnivore is a consumer that eats both plants and animals.

Decomposers break down dead organisms and return nutrients to the soil.

An example of a producer is grass.

An example of a herbivore is a rabbit.
