Quotation Marks

Quotation marks are used to indicate direct speech, quotations, or titles of short works.

If a question is within quotation marks, the question mark should be placed inside the quotation marks.

The correct way is to place a comma before the opening quotation mark if the quote is preceded by a dialogue tag.

Capitalize the first word of a quotation.

If the statement is a complete sentence, place a period inside the quotation marks.

Double quotation marks are used for direct speech, while single quotation marks are often used for quotes within quotes.

"I love reading books," said Sarah.

Use quotation marks for titles of short works like articles, poems, and songs.

If the quote ends the sentence, the punctuation goes inside the quotation marks.

Use commas to separate the quote from the dialogue tag, and continue the quote after the tag.
