Percent Word Problems

A percent is a ratio expressed as a fraction of 100. It represents a part of a whole.

To calculate a percentage of a number, multiply the number by the percentage (in decimal form). For example, to find 20% of 50, calculate 50 * 0.20 = 10.

The formula is: Total = Part / (Percentage in decimal form). For example, if 25 is 20% of a total, then Total = 25 / 0.20 = 125.

To convert a percentage to a decimal, divide the percentage by 100. For example, 75% becomes 0.75.

Commission is a fee paid to a salesperson based on the sales they make, usually expressed as a percentage of the sale.

They earn $20, calculated as 200 * 0.10.

A tax rate is the percentage at which an individual or corporation is taxed. For example, a 6% tax rate means you pay $6 for every $100 earned.

To calculate sales tax, multiply the purchase amount by the sales tax rate (in decimal form). For example, for a $50 purchase with a 6% tax rate, the tax is 50 * 0.06 = $3.

A proportional tax means that the tax rate remains constant regardless of the amount being taxed. For example, a 5% tax rate applies to all amounts.

To find the original price before tax, divide the total price by (1 + tax rate in decimal form). For example, if the total is $106 with a 6% tax, the original price is 106 / 1.06 = $100.
